We ensure that the Constabulary has the right numbers of skilled people to deliver our services

Working in Human Resources

The planning and recruitment activities of the HR department ensure that Derbyshire Constabulary has the right numbers of skilled people to deliver our services. As well as developing our managers, we provide support to them through a dedicated team of HR Advisors, each of whom ensure that our people are well-managed and performing to the best of their ability.

We also have wellbeing services in place to support our staff when they need it and, through a range of corporate and strategic projects, continue to develop and improve our overall offering.

It’s an exciting time to work in policing as lots of things are changing, including the recruitment and training routes into the force. We were the first force in the country to start a degree apprenticeship programme for police officers and we’re now working with universities to develop a graduate entry programme.

Should you join us in HR, you’ll need to have excellent communication skills and believe in great teamwork. You’ll also need to learn how to use our computer systems and, depending on your role, gain an understanding of the employment framework for police officers, as well as our HR policies and procedures. All of this is done via on-the-job learning that's supplemented by occasional regional or national workshops and training courses.

While we’re not on the frontline, the work of the HR team contributes directly to providing an effective policing service, keeping the people of Derbyshire safer.

Investing in your development

We know that to protect and support our community effectively we need to keep up-to-date with new approaches, processes and technologies. This means that there will always be opportunities for training and professional development. We’ll continuously review your training needs and help succeed in your role. We’ll challenge you to work outside your comfort zone. And we’ll encourage you to grow.

As well as professional training and a range of in-house training opportunities, you can also look forward to plenty of personal support. This might be from your colleagues in the team, new opportunities that become available or through membership of one of our many staff associations.

Meet some of the team

Sarah Kinney, HR Team

Leader I Initially joined Derbyshire Constabulary on a two year apprenticeship in 1996, and I’ve been here ever since. I’ve seen a lot of changes during that time, especially the technology. There was no internet or email back then! Everything was done via letters and faxes.

I started out as a personnel assistant and have worked my way up to team leader. I’m currently implementing new entry routes and managing the increase in numbers due to the uplift. I work with a fantastic team and Derbyshire offers me a good work life balance, great training and the flexibility I need to juggle work and childcare.
