What we can offer you

We're working hard to create a force where people feel valued, rewarded and safe

Taking care of each other

At Derbyshire Constabulary, we aim to create an environment that puts people first. We want you to feel supported in everything you do, so you can give your very best. So, we’ll enable you to be innovative and try new things, and we’ll celebrate your successes. We recognise that people make mistakes, so we’ll encourage you to focus on learning from them. And our health and wellbeing programmes are designed to make you feel valued and cared for.

If you have any personal or professional problems, we’ll give you the support and care you need. And we’re improving the support we offer to anyone who’s experiencing stress or mental health issues. So, we’ll listen to you, take action and communicate openly about what we’re doing. We’ll remove barriers and fix things that get in the way of doing a good job. We’ll act with compassion and stay true to our values when times are tough, including creating a workplace where any form of discrimination is unacceptable and acted on.

Our leaders need to be visible and embody this message at all times. We want to create the right culture and environment for all to thrive; one where everyone feels safe enough to seek health and wellbeing support when required and where everyone is fit and healthy as you can be.

What’s more, we’ll create innovative terms and conditions, policies and procedures that attract, engage and motivate people who share our goals and values. And we’ll make sure that you're treated fairly by holding anyone who doesn't live up to our values to account.

Shaping an effective workforce

To make sure we continue to meet the needs of the people of Derbyshire, we need to attract - and keep - the right people who have the right skills and behaviours. That means creating jobs they want and giving them chances to progress, so we can compete in an increasingly competitive market.

How do we do this? By being creative in how we recruit and select the right people. By developing career opportunities that will attract people with diverse attitudes, behaviours and skills. And by constantly looking at new ways of rewarding and developing our top-performing people and teams who show the right behaviours.

Offering and creating opportunity

We’re doing everything we can to make sure our teams reflect the communities we serve. This means we’re always looking at our existing and future needs, so we can adapt quickly to changes in funding, demands, priorities and skills. This includes looking at working with our partners to be more effective and save money - as long as it fits in with our principles and ways of working.

When you join us, we’ll give you all the support, development and investment you need to reach your full potential. This includes training and developing you from scratch, so you have everything you need to do your job as well as you can.

Health and wellbeing

Our wellbeing strategy

We’re committed to providing a healthy working environment and improving the quality of life for all our people. As part of this, we’ve developed a wellbeing strategy that recognises people are our greatest asset.

We understand that wellbeing is about far more than physical or mental health. It’s about creating a workplace that encourages people to engage, perform and achieve. Somewhere that helps them take responsibility for improving their own physical, mental, emotional and financial health. Our strategy involves bringing together existing initiatives and developing new ones to create an action plan that helps our people make the most of their wellbeing.

Health and Wellbeing - Chief Constable Rachel Swann’s Commitment

Our most important asset is our people, and we are committed to maintaining a culture where all staff feel supported and valued and job satisfaction is high. We take the health and wellbeing of our people seriously including becoming more trauma informed, building resilience, and proactively providing early intervention and support. By supporting our staff at all levels to thrive, they can deliver the absolute best service they are able to give and that our public expect, and this will contribute to becoming an employer of choice.

Listening to feedback from staff surveys, evaluations, and feedback from our people within the organisation, our executive team and governance boards will embed a supportive culture and the Well Together Working Group and Boards will support this delivery throughout the organisation.
