Our recruitment process

The recruitment process can often be long and seem overwhelming. Throughout the process we will keep in touch with you and at the end of each stage, you’ll be notified by email whether or not you are eligible to proceed to the next stage. You can also log in to view your application status and guidance, via the recruitment portal.

Top Tip: Remember to check your junk mail/filter settings in case our emails have ended up there.

What to expect

All applicants must be a UK Citizen, EU Citizen with EU Settled or Pre-Settled status, a Commonwealth Citizen or Foreign National with no restrictions on your stay in the United Kingdom. Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have lived here for at least three years immediately preceding your application.

All employees need to obtain vetting clearance as part of the pre-employment checks. You must declare any previous spent and unspent convictions and you will be asked to disclose information around your financial situation and information about your immediate family and any other adults you live with. This includes details of speeding fines, bus lane fines etc. Any fines, convictions or similar must be declared. Honesty is the best policy!

Shortlisting

Watch our video here which will explain the shortlisting process.

Interview and Assessment

If you are invited to interview, you will be sent the guidance via email and it will also be available on our recruitment portal. This will provide a comprehensive insight into the interview process. If you are required to do a presentation a briefing will also be sent to you via email, so you are able to prepare.

Once interview dates and times are scheduled, we will ask you to book an interview slot via the portal and this is also where the location will be confirmed.  Once you have booked an interview slot, you will receive an additional email that will provide names of the interview panel and confirming the detail of your booking.

We advise that the dress code for interviews is smart attire and ask that you bring with you Photo ID and your qualifications (if required). You will be advised of your result within 5 working days, after all interviews have taken place. You will also receive feedback alongside the outcome. Please note, this is the only feedback we can provide, and it will come directly from the panel.

If you are successful, the recruitment team will be in touch shortly regarding your pre-employment checks and documentation to complete. You will not receive a formal offer of appointment until all pre-employment checks are cleared.

Please speak to the recruitment team if you cannot make your interview slot by calling 0300 122 8900 or emailing recruitment@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk

Pre-employment checks

If you are successful at the interview stage, your offer is conditional to successfully clearing pre-employment checks.

If you are currently employed, please do not hand in your notice until you have received a formal contract of employment from the force.

You will be asked to complete quite a few forms at the start of the pre-employment process. Please complete these as soon as you can! The pre-employment process consists of the following:

  • Vetting
  • Medical
  • Drugs Test
  • References
  • Biometrics (Custody Detention Officer, DSI only)
Offer and contract

We aim to issue your offer letter 4-6 weeks before your start date. When you have passed all pre-employment checks, your line manager or the recruitment team will contact you to arrange a start date, this is when you should look at handing your notice in at your current employment.

A Welcome Pack will be sent to you with your contract of employment and offer letter which contains useful insights into working for the police. You will need to complete the documentation contained within the pack.

We require a wet signature to process the acceptance of your offer of employment.

The use of Artificial Intelligence

We understand the benefits of using AI in work. However, if you are thinking of using AI to support your application, we ask you to think carefully about what value it adds. AI tools tend to lack the personal touch and authenticity we value in candidates. Therefore, we encourage you to showcase your unique knowledge and skills using your own voice. The evidence you provide within your application or at interview should be your original work and thinking only. If at any point it is identified that AI has been used, your application will be rejected based on a breach of the Code of Ethics.
